When the Internet is down, what about your business?

connect_to_networkYou know it as well as I do, if you’re on the Internet for any length of time sooner or later your Internet will go down. And if you’re read here long enough over the years, you know sometimes I don’t handle it too well!

For me, lots of times it’s because I don’t know what to do instead. (Some of the things I come up with first are still things you need to do on the Internet.)

So if this has happens to you, or if you just need a checklist of things to try if you’re in this situation, consider these tips.

Do not go anywhere

While you might first consider heading to your local coffee shop with your laptop or to the nearby library, it may suit your time better if you just stay put. In particular, if you’ve got kids as by the time you pack up the kids, your work, your snacks, etc., your Internet may be back on.

Get your thinking cap on

Losing your Internet connection is an ideal time to problem solve and plan for the future. Grab a pen and paper or if you have mind-mapping software on your computer, strive to solve a few of your business challenges. You might even use this time to plan a new product or service launch. Also, brainstorm promotions for the upcoming quarter, or fine tune some of your current processes and systems.

Clean and organize

If your Internet connection is down, take this opportunity to do all of those little organizing tasks you’ve been putting off. File. Clean up your desktop. Organize your papers.

You don’t need the Internet to write content or to start on that book you’ve been thinking about writing. If you hit a point in your writing where you need to do some research, make a note of it and keep writing.

Sometimes being without the Internet is a good thing. Really it is! Once you get past the trauma of being without it.
